‘I want to say thank you’: Palestinian shop owner who refused to give up shop

A Palestinian shopkeeper in Gaza has refused to stop selling items of holiday stationerie set to celebrate Christmas after the shop owner told her she was a terrorist.

Mahmoud al-Fadwa, 38, told The Jerusalem Mail that he decided to stop the sale of Christmas decorations because he doesn’t like the religious symbols associated with the holiday.

Fadwah, a resident of Gaza City’s Beit Hanoun district, is the owner of the small shop located in the neighborhood of the Palestinian-Israeli border town of Beit Lahiya, near the southern Israeli city of Eilat.

He says that since his shop was raided by Israeli forces in October, he has been subjected to harassment by Israeli security forces and police officers, and that he has also been physically attacked.

“I’ve been harassed, robbed and beaten up,” Fadwa told The Mail.

“I’m not a terrorist, but I refuse to allow the Israelis to confiscate my Christmas decorations.”

The Israeli military raided the shop in November 2015, confiscating more than 500 pieces of holiday decor, including the original stationery set.

Israeli soldiers took several pieces of the stationery out of Fadwada’s shop after the owner refused to hand over the decorations.

The store was subsequently damaged, and he was forced to take the pieces back.FADWAH, who says he is a practicing Muslim, told Al Jazeera that he is deeply upset by the recent incident, as he does not want to make any statements against Israel that could lead to repercussions against his business.

“This is the first time that I’ve been attacked by Israeli soldiers, so I can only do this to protect my business,” Fada said.

Fadi al-Shabazz, an associate professor of political science at Bar-Ilan University, told Haaretz that the Israeli military’s decision to seize the Christmas decorations was a clear violation of Palestinian rights.

“The confiscation of these Christmas decorations is a clear and direct violation of international law,” Shabazz said.

“It is a blatant violation of the rights of the Palestinians to freedom of expression and association.”

Fadweh al-Hajj, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, told Middle East Eye that the actions of the Israeli army in seizing the decorations are a clear attack on Palestinian human rights.

The Christmas decorates are part of a series of Palestinian items that have been confiscated by Israeli authorities, according to Shabaz.

He added that these Christmas items are intended to commemorate the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which began on December 5.

“The Jewish people were robbed of their holiday, and they are being forced to give back the decorations that they stole,” he said.

“Israel is making a clear case that its occupation is the only legitimate occupation in the Middle East,” Shachem Shmuel, a lecturer at the Middle Eastern Studies Institute, told MEE.

“These are products that Israel sells in shops across the West Bank, in Israel itself, and the West bank in particular.”

Shmuel noted that the items confiscated in the past include the decorations of Bethlehem’s Qalandia settlement, which is also located in Beit Hillel.
